Self Managing Team Manager

SELF-MANAGING TEAM MANAGERS TRAINING

Self-Managing Team Managers

The role of the manager is vital to the success of any business.

Far from being an authority figure who decides what tasks his or her staff must perform, he or she must take on the role which facilitates the transfer of power and helps develop self confidence in his or her team.

They need to trust their team, support their decisions and be tolerant of mistakes.

In addition, managers must listen to their staff; use the ideas generated, and keep them involved and informed.

This process of empowerment brings many changes to a company’s traditional structure and work practices.

Why so much emphasis on the role of the Manager

The successful management of change is an increasingly important managerial responsibility and leadership is the most important asset needed during a major change.

Companies are moving away from a larger structure towards small, autonomous team led business entities.

It is necessary that the culture is there for employees to practice their skills and that this is supported at all levels but particularly by their own manager.

The ideal situation is one which is “top-led, line-managed, and staff-supported”.

People are generally only committed to those things that they helped to create, so approaches which fully integrate all levels of the organisation from the very start are much more likely to take hold and result in visible change.

Most people feel threatened by the challenge of change. Giving up power and control can cause managers to feel insecure and anxious about their positions.

Therefore it is essential that they understand and support what is happening.

Although a certain amount of conflict is inevitable, the important point is how conflict is managed and handled.

Effective team management can reduce fear but this can only be brought about under an appropriate, flexible leadership style.

It should be remembered that teams have to go through a process of change, growth and learning.

The problem is that it is easier to put forward these notions than it is to act on them!

The key elements for success

The empowering managers of today set goals in line with their company’s objectives or strategy, train, provide resources, delegate, give feedback, facilitate regular team meetings and then “get out of the way”. It works!

Many organisations have proved it works and it can work for you.
